What is a Hair Transplant?
Hair Transplantation is a type of surgery that fills an area with less or no hair by moving the hair you already have. This procedure is conducted in a clinic under the supervision of a highly experienced doctor.
Procedure:
- The surgeon cleans your scalp
- Medicines are injected to make the back of your head numb for the surgery
- One of the follicular unit extraction (FUE) or follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) is chosen by the doctor to complete the surgery
FUE
This procedure requires the surgeon to shave the back of your scalp from where the hair follicles are removed one by one. The area then heals slowly with small dots and is then covered by the existing hair. The above-mentioned processes are the basic processes to start with. After these steps for both FUSS and FUE, the affected area where the new hair is to be transplanted is numbed with the help of medication. Later holes and slits are made in this area with the help of a scalpel or needle to place the grafts one by one in the holes. The entire procedure takes about 4-8 hours, depending on the size of the transplant area.
What to expect from a hair transplantation Surgery?
The scalp remains tender for some time after the surgery and one may even need to take some pain killers for a few days. The doctor can prescribe antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs to the patient. The person will get to their daily routine in about two to five days post-operation. After 3-4 weeks of surgery the implanted hairs usually fall out. However the roots remain in side. New hairs start growing after 3 months and keep on growing life- long. It may take about a year to show the full effect of Hair Transplant.
